This year our class is learning how to "Read in the Wild" (inspired by author Donalyn Miller). We are reading like real readers. This means we:
How many of you have some type of book record account? I am a big fan of Goodreads.com. I love seeing all my book covers arrayed across my page, moving a book from my "currently reading" to "read" shelf, getting recommendations from my friends, and more. Our young readers LOVE to do these things too :)
Here are three tools I love and that I encourage you to use at home.
- Keep a book record and rate the books we read
- Give and take book recommendations from readers we trust
- Keep a list of books we want to read
- Abandon a book if it isn't a good fit (which doesn't happen too often as we are skilled in choosing)
- Read WHOLE books!

"This social media site is focused on books. Members can build virtual bookshelves, discover, rate and discuss books, and participate in online groups." -Amazon
Look to the left of this post to see our classroom Shelfari! I add every book we read together. Each student can add a Shelfari Widget to their Weebly Websites and track their own reading for display, as well!
*Check our Shelfari regularly to see what we have been reading in class. I encourage you to reread these books together at home! It is great for students to have multiple exposures to books as well as the chance to share some of the discussions and strategies we shared while we read at school!

"Kids connect with friends, parents and teachers to share and recommend their favorite books. They can setup virtual bookshelves, catalogue books, track their reading, and more!" -Biblionasium
Mr. Jeffery has introduced and taught how to use Biblionasium at school. It is a very secure, closed network space for kids to connect with other QAE kids and teachers. Kids should be able to log in from home! Let me know if you have trouble.

"Goodreads is a free website for book lovers. Imagine it as a large library that you can wander through and see everyone's bookshelves, their reviews, and their ratings. You can also post your own reviews and catalog what you have read, are currently reading, and plan to read in the future." -Goodreads.com
Goodreads is far more exciting than Facebook (in my humble opinion!). I'd love to be friends with you so I can receive recommendations and browse your book reviews! While Goodreads is not as closed networked or kid centered as Biblionasium, it is very real to kids as they know adults love it to use it! I think it would be really great to open a joint account with your child to record your shared reading in a very authentic format. Check it out ;)
